"Ila's War"

Ila’s War is the memoir of an obscure Kansas woman who overcame enormous obstacles to live, for her time, a remarkably worldly life — even going off to war in Australia. Many of the family crises Ila endured are pegged to major historical events in this country including the efforts of the Kansas Ku Klux Klan to drive Catholics out of business, the nation-wide Jamaica Ginger epidemic, and World War II. It is written in her voice, from letters, diaries, and a tape recording she left behind when she died in 2003.
